New Books in the library!

There are a large number of new books in the SCA library!  Be sure to stop by and check them out.  Murder, mystery, fantasy, sci-fi, anime, humor, romance and much more! Some examples are below - but there truly is something for everyone!

Blind Date with a Book

During the month of February the SCA library "set up" a few students with dates - with a book that is!
A collection of fiction and popular non fiction titles and subjects were chosen as potential dates.  These books or "dates" were wrapped in plain brown paper and a brief description was attached to the book to give a hint as to what the book was about.   The books were on display in the library for the month and several students participated. Students who checked out a "date" were given a "rate your date" slip on which they could state if they liked the book and would they read another book by the same author. When the students returned their book the "rate a date" slip was entered in a draw for a $15 gift card to Chapters.
Katelyn Halkeyard in grade 11 was the winner. Congratulations and thanks to the students who participated   - hope you discovered a new author, or genre or just had a "good read"!

Wednesday 23 January 2013

Did you know Family Literacy Day is January 27th? The SCA library is celebrating literacy week from January 21st to January 25th. Throughout the week students "caught reading" at different times will be given a small prize.  SCA students are also involved in creating "Book Spine Poetry."  Over the past two days students have stopped in to the library during lunch hour and created a wide variety of unique and interesting poems using library books!  Pictures of our poems will posted soon!  Participating students receive a small prize and their name will go into a draw for a larger prize at the end of the week. On Thursday January 24th the library will be hosting a board games event.  Students are invited to drop in and play various board games - Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble, Cranium and many others! Stop by and join the fun!  Our big literacy event will be a book swap to be held on Friday February 8th.  Literacy week is the kick off for our book swap.  Students have been asked to bring in gently used unwanted books that they may have at home to the library and in return students will receive a voucher to take a gently used book at the swap for free on February 8th.   All books for the swap must be in by February 5th.  The library will also be selling previously used copies of books for 25 cents to $1.00 in price during the swap!  Be sure to check out other literacy week activities at local organizations near you!

Things have been busy at the SCA library!  During the month of November the library hosted our annual Scholastic Book Fair.  Enough money was raised to receive $750 worth of books into the SCA library collection.  These profits will be chosen from Scholastic during the month of February when a new commission order form is released.

The week long festivities during our Hollywood fair "Lights Camera Read" included a teacher preview complete with coffee and treats,  numerous contests such as guessing games, teacher sneak peek reads    and popcorn sales!  Our fair concluded with a great "Stump the Teacher" trivia game show - live on stage in our cafetorium during both junior and senior lunches!  A big thank you to the teachers who participated in this event and to the school community for your participation and support of our Scholastic Book fair!
